T-shirts, polo shirts and stationery: the charitable contribution of Xylem has reached the Josephinians mission in Sierra Leone and most part of it has already been shared.
The venetian company, with the help of Engim Internazionale, wishes to demonstrate full support and solidarity to one of the most tormented popolations of Africa.
‘As soon as the shipment arrived we started to hand it out to the people we work with, either in Lunsar, Freetown and Makeni. Our workers, teachers and everyone who contributes to the fight against poverty in our development projects was involved in this distribution action’, says father Gianni Zanni of the Lunsar Community. ‘With the beginning of a new academic year we will be able to supply our students with the t-shirts we received. Considering the students attending the high school and the training centres, we can talk about more than 2000 pupils, most of them in great need.’
Xylem, leading company in the water exploitation, conservation and recycle sector offered 80 thousand dollars in t-shirts, polo shirts and stationery. An extraordinary contribution for a country like Sierra Leone, which 11 eleven years after the civil war remains one of the poorest countries in the world: the national per capita income is under 150 $ per year and 64% of popolation is still illiterate. In spite of the recent improvements, the country still experiences an extremely high Infant Mortality Rate, with an Under Five Mortality Rate of 284 every 1000 live-born children.
‘Children of Sierra Leone live in noticeably hard conditions, with no access to fundamental goods expected by the other children of the world’, states Enzo Violi, producer-manager of Xylem Italia. ‘With this contribution in clothing and stationery goods we intended to give a tangible help and bring some happiness to these children.’
The Xylem company is present in more than 150 countries over the world and numbers nearly 12.700 employees working for a common purpose: provide alternative solutions for the planet in the field of water access and security.
The choice of “Xylem” as a name for the company is perceptive. The term indeed comes from the greek language, namely referring to the plant tissue accountable for the water flow; this is to recall not only its constant ambiton to technological efficiency but also that there’s a perfect solution to the water supply problem findable directly from its primary source, the nature.
